Sending personal essays out into the world is a little bit like spilling your innermost desires onto paper, sticking the slip into a bottle, and tossing it out to sea — the utmost act of courage, but also of feeling unmoored. Where will wash up, and to whom? I had some time to ponder this moments ago, as the brisk waters of the Atlantic churned against my feet.
